Welcome to the Sports Studies department

What’s it all about?

Sport is one of the most globally dominating and influential industries around today. Events such as World Cups and the Olympics unite countries, putting aside differences and bringing communities together to support one cause. It forms culture and social identity, whether you've been a Hammer or a Gunner from birth, or even if playing in your local 5-a-side tournament is part of your weekly routine. With this in mind, the sport industry in the UK is experiencing a turn of growth, due to new Government health initiatives and a rise in sports funding. More emphasis is being put on the importance of being fit and healthy than ever before, which in turn is creating more and more career opportunities for sport and fitness nuts.

Our Sports Science and Health & Fitness study programmes have been designed to inspire you to become the best athletes and coaches you can be, while experiencing the highest-quality sporting education in the area.

Is it for me?

Whether it's football you're interested in, athletics, sports therapy, or even just keeping fit in general, if you have the passion and determination to succeed, we will help you unlock your potential to be the best you can be. Whichever course of study you choose, commitment and passion are a must. Come and learn from people with a wealth of experience and knowledge, and step up to the challenge. Our programmes are an ideal opportunity to combine your interests in sport with a career, and enter the job market with vast possibilities.

What will I do?

You will have access to our fantastic facilities, in which you will develop skills in your specialism, and gain the essential know-how of how to relate them to business, and build a successful career. Ever wanted to have a go at running your own fitness session, or sports taster day? You will have the chance to organise events that could link in to any of our well established partnerships with over 30 schools, sports centres and coaching organisation.

We have a number of opportunities for you to join academies such as the Women’s Sport Academy where you can study while training and represent the College at a national level within the British Colleges of Sport (BCS).

You may be interested in sports leadership and coaching where you will have the chance to volunteer as a sports leader and work alongside our sports development team to become a coach. In 2014, our students studying this qualification went to Brazil for the Football World Cup!

What can I do next?

Some students stay on with the College after Level 3 to do a Higher Education course and work towards careers which require a degree like physiotherapy or teaching. Others may go straight into employment or an Apprenticeship, or even set up their own business as a Personal Trainer. Some of our students have gone to train professionally in other countries, or have entered into a professional sport.

National College Cup and Play-offs

We encourage our students and teams to get involved with every opportunity possible. The English School's Football Association puts on multiple competitions and tournaments  throughout the year, and The MK College Men’s Elite Football Team saw brilliant success in February at the National College Cup tournament. MK College Launches Women’s Sport Academy

The MKC Women’s Sport Academy (WSA) provides female sports people aged 16 and over with the chance to train, represent the College and gain opportunities to help those with aspirations of careers in sport.

MK Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy is dedicated to those want to enter the world of sport education, coaching and specificly teaching sport to children. If this sounds like you're kind of thing, you can expect to take part and organise a variety of events and taster sessions with children from the local community, as well as primary schools. There are vast opportunities for you to obtain different qualifications from a variety of awarding bodies to add to your CV, including swimming and gymnastics.

"My tutor Ian Greenwood showed immense support to me and other students, and also helped us get a job. The College has given me all of the resources and education I need to be able to progress to university, and with the work experience I've had I believe I'll be able to have a career as a physiotherapist."
