Welcome to the Motor Vehicle department

What’s it all about?

There's a machine for almost everything nowadays. Technology can tell you if it's raining before you've even opened the curtains. However there are a few vital things that machinery cannot do, the simplest of those being changing a tyre. Cars are so advanced that they can drive themselves, however they are yet to be able to fix themselves - meaning that mechanics, engineers and motor vehicle technicians are in high demand.

Motor vehicle technicians repair and service cars, vans, motorbikes, lorries and coaches. They work on all vehicle mechanics and electrics, from engines and exhaust systems to air-conditioning and security. These skills are invaluable in both personal and professional life - we all want a friend that can fix that worrying noise coming from your car bonnet, and if you can do it yourself then even better.

Working in the purpose-built Motor Vehicle Workshop on campus, you will gain hands-on experience in fixing a range of models, driven by fully experienced tutors. The motor vehicle programmes are designed to develop your skills required for today’s automotive industry, which is constantly evolving.

Is it for me?

If you have an interest in vehicles, how they work and how you can improve them, then joining us at Milton Keynes College will speed you along your journey to the finishing line - whether the next step is further education, University or an apprenticeship.

What will I do?

You will grow your understanding of how to repair and maintain a variety of motor vehicle systems using industry leading techniques. Our excellent links with local businesses will allow you to gain exposure to the working environment through work placements with local garages, and learn how to master modern equipment in a real workplace.

You can also get involved with fundraising events including vehicle safety checking and community car washing. There is also the prospect of exciting industry visits, including the British Transport Museum in Coventry, European Drag Racing Championships at Santa Pod and an Automotive Industry Expo at Silverstone F1 Circuit.

What can I do next?

Once you've got the skills and the knowledge, the next step is up to you. Have you ever thought about running your own garage? Self-employment as a mobile mechanic? What about the Armed Forces? You will also have the option to further your education, and earn while you learn with an apprenticeship. You can also stay in full-time study and progress up through the different levels, gaining new skills and more experience.
