Welcome to the Hospitality & Catering department

What’s it all about?

The catering and hospitality industry is exciting and dynamic. It encourages you to be creative, learn new skills and travel the world. If you have a passion for hospitality, we offer you expert training in a professional setting. Whether you want to be part of the excitement in the kitchen or feel the buzz of front of house, we have a course to suit you.

Is it for me?

Are you interested in working in a creative and fast-paced industry, which has exceptionally high standards? To work in the service industry, you need to have the ability to work well as part of a team and in a high pressured environment. So you must be able to cope well under pressure working methodically and to remarkably high standards.

What will I do?

You’ll train in our modern, well-equipped kitchens and award winning restaurant, The Brasserie, which currently holds AA College Rosette: Highly Commended status in addition to Gold Accreditation from People1st, recognising the outstanding levels of training alongside excellent service. The Brasserie has also won received many prestigious awards, including the TripAdvisor Centre of Excellence and the 2016 MK Business Achievement Awards: Hospitality category.

You’ll attend demonstrations and talks from visiting chefs, gain rich knowledge and experience, learn industry-standard skills to stand out in the job market. All the while having access to our extensive employer links, which will provide lots of opportunity for work experience with the likes of Whittlebury Hall, Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, Pretty Sweet – London and Champneys. You will also get the chance to practice your skills catering for numerous college and community events. Our students have even catered for Prince Edward when he visited the Mayors Civic Ceremony in Milton Keynes.

In addition to all this, our students also have the opportunity to enter into competitions where you can showcase your expertise and skills, and have the chance to win some outstanding prizes. Three Hospitality & Catering students were victorious in the prestigious Zest Quest Asia cooking contest, winning a culinary experience to Bangkok, Thailand.

What can I do next?

With some of our past students now working for some of the most prestigious restaurants including Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, The Savoy, The Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva and The Lanesborough Hotel in London and the average person entering into a managerial role within Hospitality before they are 30, the options for our students are limitless. Alternatively, you may choose to progress into a higher qualification or start an apprenticeship.

Milton Keynes College has partnered with BBC's Bake-Off Crème de la Crème judge Claire Clark MBE’s patisserie academy. This exciting, newly-formed partnership will put students through their paces where they will learn specialist techniques to be successful in the pastry business.
