University Level Qualifications Explained

We offer a variety of university level qualifications at different levels of study. It can be quite confusing, so for you to have a better understanding, we've broken them down.

Higher Apprenticeship: A Higher Apprenticeship is a work-based programme which includes the study of a recognized Level 4 or 5 qualification. They take at least a year to complete, but can take up to four years depending on the qualification.

Higher National Certificate: The HNC is equivalent to the first year of university level study, delivered full-time in one year or part-time over two years. A HNC can allow progression onto a Higher National Diploma.

Higher National Diploma: The HND is equivalent to the second year of university-level study and is delivered full-time over one year. If you have already completed a HNC in a relevant subject, you can apply directly for the HND.

Foundation Degree: Foundation Degrees (Fda or FdSc) are equivalent to the first two years of traditional university level study. They can be studied full or part-time, and many students choose to top up their Foundation Degree by completing their final year at an awarding university.

Bachelor's Degree: This is the most common type of university level qualification, and can be taken in a wide variety of subjects. You can study for either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). These degrees normally take between three to four years to complete on a full-time basis. Completion of either a Foundation Degree or a HND can provide access to a Bachelor's Degree programme.
