The Transition From School to College

Coming to College is the first step in a young person’s journey to independence. Taking responsibility for their future for probably the first time, this transition can be quite challenging.

At Milton Keynes College we want to work with parents, carers and guardians to make sure that every young person has the support they need to achieve their full potential.

Like any successful partnership, we welcome and value your thoughts and feedback so that we can continuously improve our services for young people.

Get in Touch

At Milton Keynes College we are committed to working in partnership with parents and carers to ensure students get all the support they need. Whether you want to talk to us about something specific or sign up for regular updates, we’d love to hear from you.

Student development & Support

Learning Support

We provide many opportunities for students to tell us about their specific needs. We understand that asking for help can be difficult, but the sooner we know about support needs, the more time we will have to ensure everything is in place to support fully. Students can tell us about this in the following ways:

  • On Application; by ticking the Learning Support box and leaving us further details
  • Contact our team directly by phone, email, at an Open Event or coming to our offices or teaching rooms
  • Talk to their tutor once they enrol

Once we have been made aware of a support need, we will contact the student to discuss their needs further and may invite them to a meeting. This is called an Outcome Interview. It is a confidential meeting where we will record some information and make recommendations on how we might best support

Financial Support

We appreciate that funding is a concern for many students and a range of financial support is available to help meet the cost of attending College, including support with travel costs and kit fees. For more information on how to access financial support, contact our Bursary Team here.

Careers Advice

Impartial careers guidance is available from our Careers and Futures Team to help our students to plan their next steps after College, click here for for information.

Exam Support

Once the student has finished their course, they might need to take an exam. This can be a challenging and stressful time for students, but you can provide support by encouraging a healthy lifestyle and providing a calm and supportive environment. For more information and guidance, you may find this link from the UK government useful.

Wellbeing

The Wellbeing Team provide structured support to students who are experiencing a range of social, emotional or mental health difficulties. A member of our experienced team will be happy to meet with you to discuss any issues and create a plan of support to help ensure your child’s time at college is a success.
