Work experience is a great way to put college learning into practice, get insight into new industries, and add valuable new strings to your bow. That’s what students studying business at Milton Keynes College have been finding when they’ve taken up the opportunity to join the Fleet Support Services team at Mercedes-Benz Cars.
Fleet Support Services supports the Company’s colleagues, VIP customers and demonstrator fleets by handling all elements of vehicle handovers. The team hosts small groups of students throughout the year for four-day placements at the Tongwell head office, offering a unique window into this interesting and fast-paced area of the business.
During their placement, students shadow Fleet Support Services’ colleagues through many elements of their role – from inspecting vehicles, assisting with valeting duties, and using industry software and tools to support with vehicle handovers. Across all tasks, students are coached on delivering a premium level of customer service.
Nick McInerney, Workshop and AMG Handover Team Leader at Mercedes-Benz Cars, mentors the students throughout their time with the Company.
“We pride ourselves on delivering the highest quality service to all of our customers, and we expect the same of work experience students,” said Nick. “Professional behaviour and a positive attitude are of the utmost importance in our team.”
Milton Keynes College student Lewis McAdam recently spent a week with Fleet Support Services. He said: “I enjoyed all aspects of the experience, especially prepping the vehicles, reporting back and meeting customers. I have learned how to act and communicate with all kinds of customers in a high-profile environment.”
To any future students looking to take up a placement opportunity at Mercedes-Benz Cars, Nick advises: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Think of your future, and put yourself out there. Grab every opportunity you can – you never know where it might lead you!”
