Sport is arguably the most dominant industry in the world today. The Olympics, The FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon and The Masters Tournament are just a handful of examples of sporting events that grip the attention of the globe, boosting the economy through tourism, merchandise, advertising and TV rights. Also with a growing awareness of personal health and fitness, there has never been a better time to join the industry.

What will I do?

You will cover a broad variety of topics relating to the sporting industry, from anatomy and physiology, to sports psychology and sports business. You will conduct research projects, learn about officiating and the regulations of sport, and find out how to apply your skills to different career pathways. Ever thought about becoming a sports massage therapist or sports nutritionist? What about a sports psychologist, or a PE teacher? You will understand the industry first hand through work placements and relevant trips – last year a group of our students headed out to Uganda to teach games and sports to young children.

Both the Level 2 and Level 3 courses will prepare you for progression and the next steps of your career, whether you choose to head to university or go straight into the industry. Studying Sports will enable you to:

What's next?

Depending on what steps you want to take next, you could move on to study a university-level qualification to improve your knowledge in your specialism, conduct efficient research projects and make useful contacts in the industry. You could also kick your career off straight away with the experience you’ve gained, by taking up a position as a coach or teaching assistant in a local school. You could even be scouted by a sports team to join their training programme to play at a professional level.

Whether you dream of working with an Olympic team, want to help people feel better about themselves, or want to get children into your favourite sport, a qualification in sports could help you reach your goal. You must be an excellent verbal and written communicator and have excellent organisational skills. Depending on what steps you want to take next, you could move on to study a university-level qualification to improve your knowledge in your specialism, conduct efficient research projects and make useful contacts in the industry. If your goal is to study a sports and exercise related degree at University and build a successful career in the sports and exercise industry, this is the course for you.

This course is entitled ‘Preparing for Progression in Active Industries’ and will allow students to develop basic transferable skills to prepare them for the next steps within the college. This course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in Sport or Public Services. Students will be required to participate in both theory and practical lessons throughout the college week and be encouraged to develop their skills by participating in college extra-curricular activities. Some of the current students have aspirations of becoming a Personal Trainer, a Sports coach or even a Senior Officer in the Police. When studying this course, two qualifications will be completed; Level 1 in Uniformed Services and Level 1 in Exercise Studies. Students will complete the following units during a one-year course;

Level 1 Award in Exercise Studies

  • Understand the Principles of Exercise

  • Demonstrate an Understanding of safety factors relating to exercise

This Level 2 Diploma in Sport & Fitness will prepare you for entry to Level 3 Sport, as well as equip you with the academic knowledge and skills for success. You will study:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Sport
  • Psychology for Sports Performance
  • Planning & Leading Sports Activities
  • Business Skills in Sport
  • Nutrition for Sports Performance
  • Sport & Leisure Facility Operations
  • Fitness Testing
  • Sports Coaching
  • Fitness Instructing & Personal Training
  • Sports Massage with Injuries

Careers you could progress into range from: Sports therapist, PE teacher, sports scientist, sports psychologist, and many more.

Throughout the course you will be continually assessed throughout set project work and practical assessments. You will receive expert teaching from specialist teaching staff with a wide range of experience in the industry. You will have the opportunity to take part in trips and talks from industry speakers and companies from within Milton Keynes.

Entry Requirements
You must have at least 4 GCSE’s A-D, including English. You could also have successfully completed a relevant Level 1 course, and have an excellent reference.

This course will prepare you for a successful career in the sports industry, with a variety of different progression and career opportunities available to you. You can expect to study units including:

Sport and Exercise Massage
Sports Biomechanics in Action
Current Issues in Sport
Fitness Training and Programming

Each unit requires you to complete a number of assessments/assignments, which are an integral part of your learning. There are also compulsory examination units as part of the course.

As part of this course you will take part in work placements to improve your industry knowledge and experience. Companies we work with include Champneys, Daytona Motorsport, Big Rock Climbing, The Gym, Sports Therapy UK, Why Weight, and many more.

Previous Level 3 students have progressed to move on to universities, including specific sports scholarships, both in the UK and USA.

Entry Requirements
You require 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including Maths and English. Mature candidates will be considered on an individual basis.
