A career in Public Services relates to anything from the Police Force, the Armed Forces, the Emergency Services, and the Prison Service. People in this industry have the important responsibility of keeping us safe, being the first to react to criminal activity and emergencies, and keep order in society. A successful career in the services requires outstanding dedication, discipline and communication skills, but is incredibly rewarding.

What will I do?

From learning basic survival skills, to understanding the cause and control of war and conflict, to drilling and marching, no two days will be the same. You will learn more about yourself through hard work and dedication and prepare for entry in your chosen career. All of our tutors are highly-experienced in their respective fields and have vast industry links. You will undertake work experience as part of your course, this will be relevant to your chosen speciality within the public services. In addition, you will learn how to successfully work as a part of team in different leadership roles. Where possible trips will support learning, putting what you’ve learnt in the classroom out in the field. This can lead to a range of careers including the Armed Forces and uniformed services, or you could progress to university to study at a higher level.

First year
You will study how government and policies affect the work of the Uniformed Public Services and how crime affects society and understand the impact of war, conflict and terrorism. You will develop your leadership skills and learn how to successfully work as part of a team in different leadership roles.

Second year
In the second year you will study how the Uniformed Public Services responding to emergency incidents and explore the management of emergency planning. You get the opportunity to research case studies for example Grenfell Tower and Buncefield Depot Fire. You will study physical preparation (fitness training and test) and learn about custodial care.

What's next?

This course will prepare you for selection for entry into a range of different services within the sector. You will understand the application process and know what will be required of you, to give you the best possible chance to get to where you want to be. You could also continue your studies with a university-level qualification here at Milton Keynes College. Your tutors will guide you through application processes, offering support where needed.

Is it for me?

If you’ve always had a desire to join any of the public services, this is an ideal place to kick off your career. You must have a tough character, and not be afraid to take on new and sometimes intimidating tasks. Leadership and team-work skills are essential, as you will often depend on your colleagues on the job. You must be able to follow instructions precisely, be respectful and act professional at all times.

You require four GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including Maths and English.
