What will I do?

The HNC Computing course is a higher-level course that concentrates on developing the skills to succeed in industry and prepares you for work in the digital sector. Higher Nationals are well-recognised qualifications that show you are working to university-level standard. A HNC is the equivalent to the first year of a degree programme (Level 4). Completion of the HNC Computing course could lead to the HND course (Level 5).

Responsibilities: In the role of a data scientist, you’ll extract, analyse and interpret large amounts of data from a range of sources, using algorithmic, data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning and statistical tools, in order to make it accessible to businesses. You will then present your results using clear and engaging language.

 

Your daily tasks may include:

  • working closely with businesses to identify issues and use data to propose solutions for effective decision making
  • build algorithms and design experiments to merge, manage, interrogate and extract data to supply tailored reports to colleagues, customers or the wider organisation
  • using machine learning tools and statistical techniques to produce solutions to problems
  • testing data mining models to select the most appropriate ones for use on a project
  • maintaining clear and coherent communication, both verbal and written, to understand data needs and report results
  • creating clear reports that tell compelling stories about how customers or clients work with the business
  • assessing the effectiveness of data sources and data-gathering techniques and improve data collection methods

  • looking for opportunities to use insights/datasets/code/models across other functions in the organisation (for example in the HR and marketing departments)

Project: Changing Face of FinTech

Overview: Xero have an established reputation for delivering high-integrity accounting. Students are given the opportunity to complete the Xero Advisor Certification, demonstrating their knowledge of the UK’s leading cloud accounting, before joining the Xero Developer community. With this knowledge, students can begin to build integrated Xero software applications for small businesses across the globe.

All of our programmes are assessed with a mix of controlled assessments and assignment/coursework. Projects completed as part of the course(s) are based on live briefs from industry employers, ensuring relevant workplace experience and potential job prospects. Students are expected to complete an extended work experience placement to give them the best opportunity for progressing onto higher education, apprenticeships and/or full-time employment.

At Level 4/5 entry, total qualification time is estimated at 1,200 hours per academic year, of which 480 hours are guided learning hours.
This equates to approx. 15 hours per week taught (face-to-face and e-learning) and 15+ hours per week independent self-study during term time. Additional time is allocated for work experience and/or industry placement.
This course can be studied both full-time in one-year and part-time in two-years.

At Level 4/5 entry, students are expected to have achieved at least 32-48 UCAS points in computing, information technology or similar discipline – e.g. C grade at A-Level, MP grade at BTEC/OCR/UAL Level 3, Pass at Access – or relevant industry experience considered.
