Health and Fitness Foundation Degree

What will I do?

Physiological function and response, exercise nutrition and fitness training methods are just some of the modules you will study in depth on this course. You can expect to dive into the psychology of individuals and groups in sport and exercise, the concepts of health, and the link between nutrition and non-communicable disease. You can expect a mixture of face-to-face and online learning, with required hours of work placements. You will have use of the MK Personal Training Studio for you to practice with personal clients, as well as 50% discount on Fitness Instructing and Personal Training qualifications.

As well as workplace training and expert tutoring, you will be exposed to the industry through a variety of trips, activities and visits. These include:

  • Lab sessions at University of Northampton: In year 2 you will head to the sports science labs over at UoN for lactate testing and Vo2 Max assessments, in order to develop practical application of exercise physiology. This will also give you a chance to experience university life.
  • UKSCA: You will visit the UKSCA Foundation Workshop in Strength and Conditioning at St. Mary’s University in Twickenham – find out more!

Due to the academic nature of this course an entry requirement of 96 UCAS points have been set, alternatively a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification will be accepted accompanied by an entry exam. We require that all applicants have at least a C/4 in GCSE English and Maths. Mature candidates will be considered on a individual basis and be required to complete an entry exam.

Each unit is assessed separately by a number of different methods to include;
reports, presentations, research projects, practical assessments, exams, work placements and lab reports. Assessments are spread throughout the year with an exam period towards the end, in line with the dates of the University of Northampton.

Student progress is monitored through regular one-to-one tutorials and assessment of project work. You will also have a Personal Tutor who will support you with your studies.

Approximately 15 hours per week over two days of face to face lectures. You will then need to study in your own time for at least an additional 10 hours a week, in order to further research the units and complete assessments. You will also be required to undertake a work placement in year 1 and year 2 with small scale research projects.
