Aeronautical Engineering

Engineering generates around 25% of our yearly income in the UK. Engineers create, test and build, incorporating innovation, logic and purpose into their work. A career in aeronautical engineering promises cutting-edge technology and ground-breaking work. Aerospace engineers research, design, develop, maintain and test the performance of anything from civil aircrafts to missiles and space vehicles. Safety and efficiency is at the forefront of every project, along with innovation and progression.

What will I do?

You’ll use industry standard equipment in our Innovation and Technology Centre, including CAD software and our fully functioning wind tunnel. You will learn how to work safely in potentially dangerous environments, and study aircraft propulsion systems, airframe construction and first line maintenance. Learning from highly experienced tutors, you will conduct research assignments relevant to the industry now, not five years ago, and work on an individual specialist engineering project of your choice. Units you will study include engineering product design and manufacture, delivery of engineering processes safely as a team, applied commercial and quality principles in engineering and much more.

What's next?

This Level 3 qualification will give you a broad-based understanding of the aeronautical and aviation industry. This means you will learn highly-skilled, complex and specialist detailed work, assembling aircraft propulsion systems according to specific work instructions and using relevant hand and machine tools to diagnose complex avionic faults. These skills will prepare you for the next level of study, which could be an apprenticeship or progression to a higher education course. A recent graduate is now an apprentice at Rolls Royce. Career opportunities in engineering are vast, with advanced skills and experience required to progress.

Is it for me?

Engineering is ideal for people who can use their initiative and solve problems with imaginative and pragmatic solutions. If you are a logical thinker, can think outside of the box and are inspired by the latest developments in technology, a career in one of the most in-demand industries could be the making of you. There are a variety of paths you can go down to pursue this, and jobs require practical skills just as much as academic ones. Passion and dedication are the key to success, and a lot of hard work is required.
