What will I do?

This qualification provides an understanding of common childhood illnesses, including how to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children, how to recognise when a child is unwell, and how to manage acute and chronic health conditions in an early years setting.

The Certificate in Understanding Common Childhood Illnesses comprises of 11 units:

  • Unit 1 – How infection is spread
  • Unit 2 – Ways to minimise cross infection when working with babies and young children
  • Unit 3 – Role of policies and procedures to maintain a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children
  • Unit 4 – Role of healthy initiatives when working with babies, young children and families
  • Unit 5 – How to recognise when a baby or young child is unwell
  • Unit 6 – How to support and care for a baby or young child who is unwell in the early years setting
  • Unit 7 – Policies and procedures relating to the care of babies and young children who are unwell in an early years setting
  • Unit 8 – Accidents that may occur in an early years setting
  • Unit 9 – Serious illness in babies and young children
  • Unit 10 – Management of acute and chronic health conditions in an early years setting
  • Unit 11 – Allergies and food intolerances

The course duration is 6 weeks, and requires three to four hours of study per week. Course start dates are flexible, but learners are expected to successfully complete the programme of study within the allocated timescale.

Learners will receive a nationally recognised qualification by successfully completing this course. The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Common Childhood Illnesses is awarded by CACHE.

The course requires three assessments to be completed and passed to achieve the qualification. Students are allocated a tutor who will mark their assessments, and can be contacted by telephone or email if required.

Students must be at least 19 years of age to enrol for the course.

Applicants aged 19-23 are eligible if they have already achieved a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent. Please contact us for clarification if required.

Applicants aged 24+ do not require any prior academic qualifications, but need a reasonable level of English language ability in order to complete a distance learning course.

Applicants must have lived in the EU for the last three years, currently reside in England, with a postcode outside of Greater Manchester, Liverpool City, Cambridge & Peterborough, Tees Valley, and the West Midlands. Please contact providers in your local area for alternative options.
