Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare

This course will help you gain an understanding of the requirements of the residential care worker and support the development of your vocational practice. It will enhance your career prospects and can lead to further training opportunities.

What will I do?

The course covers all areas of the residential care worker role e.g. communication, behaviour management, supporting learning activities and safeguarding. This course is approximately 50% theory and 50% practical.

You will study the following 16 mandatory units:

  • Understand the development for children and young people in residential childcare
  • Understand how to safeguard and protect children and young people in residential childcare
  • Understand how to support children and young people who have experienced harm or abuse
  • Promote effective communication and information handling in residential childcare settings
  • Support risk management in residential childcare
  • Assessment and planning with children and young people in residential childcare
  • Support group living in residential childcare
  • Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people in residential childcare
  • Support attachment and positive relationships for children and young people in residential childcare
  • Support the well-being and resilience of children and young people in residential childcare
  • Support children and young people in residential childcare to achieve their learning potential
  • Support children and young people in residential childcare to manage their health
  • Support the development of socially aware behaviour with children and young people in residential childcare
  • Engage in professional development in residential childcare settings
  • Support the rights, diversity and equality of children and young people in residential childcare
  • Participate in teams to benefit children and young people in residential childcare

Your allocated workplace trainer will also guide you in selecting optional units relevant to your job/placement

We will also support your development in English and maths which are a key component of all College programmes.

What's next?

After successfully completing the course you could progress onto the level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare. Alternatively you could seek an apprenticeship in the sector or enter employment within Residential Care environment for children and young people aged up to 19 years.

  • You will need to have a minimum of three month’s experience of supporting the care of children who live in some form of residential care setting learning. This can be on an employed or voluntary basis. You must be working or volunteering in this environment for a minimum of nine hours a week throughout the course.
  • You need to be over 19 years
  • You will be required to complete an initial assessment in English and Maths and achieve an appropriate level.

There is continuous assessment through knowledge work books online plus observations of your practice in the workplace.

Your progress is monitored through theory workshops and one to one sessions with your allocated Workplace Trainer. You will also use the OneFile e-portfolio system.

This qualification is at Level 3 and runs over 9 months.
