The industry has never been more in demand. With an increasing life expectancy, a growing population and the needs of society changing, there have never been more career opportunities in this sector. The ways of delivering care and support is evolving to meet the need for more specialist care and education, with the NHS alone offering over 350 different types of role. This means that traditional roles such as nursing, caregiving and teaching are developing to offer more effective care and education. Together, the health and social care sectors employ one in ten of the working population in the UK, with an extra half a million jobs expected to be filled by 2030.

What will I do?

The best way to learn how to care for people is to do exactly that. You will experience working in different settings in various roles to help you establish exactly where your passion and talents lie. You could be experiencing life on one of the wards at Milton Keynes Hospital one week, and delivering specific care for dementia patients in a care home the next. You will learn to make a vital difference in people’s lives, from nurturing young children to giving specialist care to vulnerable people of all ages. This course will equip you with the theoretical knowledge, practical experience and self-confidence to kick off a promising and successful career.

What's next?

Depending on your chosen pathway, you could carry on studying with a university-level qualification in your specialism. Your course is an ideal starting point to progress to studying areas such as midwifery, social work, nursing, mental health nursing and counselling. You could also kick off your career straight away by using the contacts and experience you gained whilst on your course to gain employment in your chosen setting. The industry also has great progression opportunities. You can branch out into different areas of care, and develop your management and leadership skills.

You must be compassionate, supportive and understanding of people who are at different stages of their lives. You will be a friendly face, a helping hand, a caregiver, and sometimes even a lifeline to people in their time of need. Your personal values, behaviour and whole demeanour are very important to forging a successful career in this industry.
