What will I do?

Whether you’ve got your sights set on becoming the CEO of your own start-up business or want to work for a fantastic company in a specific department, you will experience life in the industry first hand. Learning from industry experienced tutors, you will explore topics such as marketing, accounting, human resources, business law and communication, giving you a well-rounded set of skills and knowledge.

You will be timetabled to attend Lessons on 3 days and will spend up to 16.5 hours in the classroom. The other two days each week will consist of work experience, enhancements and additional learning designed to support your wider success on the Study Programme — you may be required to attend College or a Work Experience placement in addition to your normal timetabled days. English and Maths resits will be part of your Study Programme unless you have already achieved a 4/C or above—you will be enrolled on either GCSE resits or Functional Skills depending on your starting point. All elements of the Study Programme are mandatory and attendance to all timetabled sessions and study programme elements is required including work experience, enhancements and workshops on non-timetabled days.

Work experience
This is a compulsory element of the programme for level 2 and level 3. At level 3 students will be expected to do two days a week work experience and at level 2, depending on how many resits they are taking for maths and English it could be between 35 hours over the year and two days a week. We will try help find a placement but if you have contacts this could be helpful. Work experience cannot be where you currently work. Completing work experience is a requirement to progress to level 3 and year 2. Level 1s may do work experience but it is likely to be work related activities carried out as part of an extension of your college day.

What's next?

If you want to move into a specialism such as HR, accounting or marketing, you can go on to study a university-level course to become further qualified. You could also find a junior position in your chosen field, or even start up your own business. You could go on to become certified by one of the recognised awarding organisations in your field, including AAT, CIM or CIPD, increasing your chances of progression once in employment. Please note that progression is dependent on attendance being 85%.

We expect all of our students to be professional and conduct themselves as such. The department operates a dress code, jeans and joggers are allowed, but not ripped jeans or trousers. No crop tops or offensive slogans on clothing, and no short skirts or shorts.

This level 1 course will equip you with the skills and experience to progress to level 2 Business. The units you will study include:

What are the entry requirements?
No formal entry requirements are required but you need to be working at level 1 for English and maths. The awarding body is BTEC and the qualification is currently all coursework with no exams.

The GCSE resits and Functional Skills component is assessed by an exam or online exam and you will be given guidance and support to achieve this.

The Level 2 Business Course will develop your understanding of the world of Business and will allow you to start learning about some of the different areas in Business in preparation for further Study at Level 3 or as an Apprentice.

In addition to the taught lessons you will have a tutorial and carry out work experience. Business students have had work experience in a number of offices in Central Milton Keynes including Home Retail Group, Salisbury and Santander in the past.

You require 2 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English.

This is a coursework based qualification with no exams. The full qualification and units from this qualification are graded at a pass, merit or distinction.
The GCSE resits and Functional Skills component is assessed by an exam or online exam and you will be given guidance and support to achieve this.

The Level 3 Business course will give a broad understanding of the world of Business and Industry with a variety of specialist units aimed at preparing you for advanced Apprenticeships, University or Employment.

This course is taught by teachers with real industry experience. You will have tutorials and carry out work experience enabling you to experience the industry first hand and prepare for your next steps.
