What does this course cover?

The course covers all areas of the teaching assistant role. This course is approximately 50% theory and 50% practical.  

You will study the following seven mandatory units:

  • Child development and well-being
  • Curriculum planning, monitoring, delivery and assessment
  • Development of the higher level teaching assistant role
  • Promote positive working relationships
  • Promote positive behaviour in children and young people
  • Supporting children and young people with special educational needs
  • Working with individuals and groups undertaking a learning activity.

What can I do after this course?

This qualification can be used as a stepping stone to training as a teacher or assessor.
Learners may wish to take teacher training qualifications such as:   
•Level 3 Award in Education and Training                                                  
•Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
•Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

Entry requirements

You will need to have been employed as a teaching assistant for a minimum of three months, supporting learning activities within a school environment. You will need to demonstrate the required levels of responsibility relevant to this level 4 qualification.

On this basis, volunteers may be considered. You must be working or volunteering in this environment for a minimum of nine hours a week throughout the course.

You will be required to complete an initial assessment in English and Maths and achieve an appropriate level.

You must be a minimum of 16 years old.

Course detail

How much will I have to study each week?

There will be four hours of study a week. 

How will I be assessed?

There is continuous assessment through assignments online plus observations of your practice in the workplace. 

How will my progress be monitored?

Through theory workshops and one-to-one sessions with your allocated workplace trainer. You will also use a one-file e-portfolio system.
