What does this course cover?

The course covers all areas of the role of a childcare practitioner e.g. communication, behaviour management, implementing the Early Years Foundation Stage, supporting positive outcomes for children and safeguarding. This course is approximately 50% theory and 50% practical.

You will study the following 9 mandatory units:

  • Understanding children and young people’s development
  • Implement the Early Years Foundation Stage
  • Diversity, equality and inclusion in Early Years Settings
  • Plan and provide effective teaching and learning in early years planning
  • Make accurate and productive use of assessment in the Early Years Sector
  • Develop effective and informed professional practice in an Early Years Setting
  • Promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the Early Years Sector
  • Child protection and safeguarding
  • Partnership working in early years.

Your allocated Workplace Trainer will also guide you in selecting optional units relevant to your job/placement.

We will also support your development in English and maths which are a key component of all College programmes.

What can I do after this course?

After successfully completing the course you could progress onto the level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management. Alternatively you could seek an apprenticeship in the sector or enter employment within an Early Years Setting in a senior position.

Entry requirements

  • You will need to have a minimum of three month’s experience of supporting the care of children in an Early Years Setting. This can be on an employed or voluntary basis. You must be working or volunteering in this environment for a minimum of nine hours a week throughout the course
  • You need to have English and maths GCSEs at Grade C or above on enrolment
  • You will be required to complete an initial assessment in English and Maths and achieve an appropriate level.

How will I be assessed?

There is continuous assessment through knowledge work books online plus observations of your practice in the workplace.

How will my progress be monitored?

You will be continually monitored through theory workshops and one to one sessions with your allocated Workplace Trainer. You will also use the OneFile e-portfolio system.
