About the Industry

Barber shops, hair and beauty salons and nail bars are in the top 10 most popular business start-ups. The industry offers vast opportunities for self-employment, progression, international travel and flexible working. A flair for business is just as important as creativity, as are ‘people’ skills such as confidence, communication and empathy. You can use your skills and imagination to improve someone’s life, whether it’s by making them feel good about themselves, solving a problem, or simply just having someone to talk to.

What will I do?

The best way for you to learn how to style hair, deliver treatments and communicate with customers is to do just that, which is why from day one you’ll be learning in our commercial Graduate Salon. You will experience all areas of salon life, from greeting customers, to giving consultations, to showing off the finished product. Keeping up to date with all the latest trends, you will gain practical and theoretical knowledge in offering the best possible treatment and service. You will be taught by highly-experienced staff and learn from visiting speakers from the industry.

What's next?

Do you enjoy making people feel better about themselves? A simple re-style or makeover can boost confidence in so many different ways. You must be friendly, understanding and patient with customers and your colleagues. Building a client base is very important, so you must be able to make people feel at ease with you and build their trust. A diverse skillset will enable you to go further in your career, so you must be willing to try new things. It’s important to keep up with current trends, for example how social media now has a huge influence on the hair and beauty industry.

Is it for me?

Our live learning environments are focused on getting you ready for work as soon as possible. You could use the contacts you’ve gained to start work straight away in a nearby salon, hotel or local business. You could also start your own beauty or hairstyle business. You could continue your studies through an Apprenticeship and gain further qualifications and experience while earning a wage. There are plenty of courses that will complement your skillset, including gel nails, spray tan, Indian head massage, and lots more.

If you are aiming towards studying at Level 3, you will need at least four GCSEs at minimum grade 4/C, including English and Maths. However, these requirements and any others specific to the course will be discussed at interview.
