About the Industry

Every year between 1.5 and 2.5 million families access support services for children and young people. Over 500,000 people have the responsibility of delivering these services, ranging from early years education, social work and fostering services. You have the opportunity to make a huge difference in children’s lives, helping them to learn basic skills such as tying shoelaces or learning to count. It’s a challenging, but very rewarding industry to work in, that offers vast progression opportunities.

What will I do?

From providing activities to support children’s needs, right up to learning how to give essential paediatric emergency first aid, you will become a well-rounded care giver and educator to children of all ages. You will spend a lot of time within various workplaces, extending your skills and knowledge through hands on experience. You will explore all areas of childcare, including safeguarding, personal, social and emotional development, supporting children with additional needs and more.

What's next?

Have you always liked being around children? Do you want to make a difference to children’s lives? If you’ve got an understanding nature and are determined to succeed, a career in childcare can be extremely rewarding. You will inspire and teach children in a variety of different ways, so you must be patient, supportive and able to remain calm under pressure.

Is it for me?

The amount of work experience you will complete on this course will prepare you to head straight into a career. You will have made plenty of industry contacts, and have the relevant desired qualifications to get going. You could also continue your studies with a university-level qualification in a relevant subject, including teacher training, nursing, social work, or psychology.

If you are aiming towards studying at Level 3, you will need at least four GCSEs at minimum grade 4/C, including English and Maths. However, these requirements and any others specific to the course, will be discussed at interview.
