Access to Higher Education
The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification that prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university.
The Access to Higher Education courses we currently offer include:
- Health Sciences
- Social Sciences
- Business Studies
- Teaching and Education
- Computing
- Criminology
- Engineering
These Access courses are nationally-recognised Level 3 qualifications designed to prepare adults to study in higher education. Courses are designed, in particular, for people who have been out of education for some time, especially those who left school with too few qualifications to be able to go straight to university. Access to Higher Education courses provide a good foundation in the knowledge and skills required for studying at university level so that students are confident and well prepared when they go on to higher education.
All Access to Higher Education courses have been designed to give academic subject knowledge and the opportunity to learn how to approach study at university level and develop techniques to help students succeed
Access courses
Business
This pathway includes a variety of units, including:
- Business Communication
- Business Management Accounting
- Consumer Protection Law and Business Implications
- Developing a Business Plan
- Marketing Principles and Implications for Business
- Setting up a New Small Business
- The Nature and Context of Business
- Introduction to Microeconomics
- Business Recruitment and Retention
- Financial Planning in Business
Health Care
This pathway includes a variety of units, including:
- Sociology: development of social welfare; poverty and housing; and social Policy
- Health Studies: developing of professional practice in healthcare; health Promotion, and an introduction to safeguarding
- Biology: human biology; basic anatomy and physiology
- Further skills: communicating through speaking and listening; reading and writing skills. Application of numbers using calculation. Application of numbers using data interpretation.
Social Sciences
This course covers a variety of topics in different modules, including:
- Sociology: the history of welfare in the UK. How the British state functions and deals with issues, and poverty and safeguarding.
- Health Studies: developing professional practice in healthcare; health promotion, and introduction to safeguarding.
- Social & Developmental Psychology: how and why human beings change over the course of their life.
- Criminology: what makes some people commit certain crimes
- Psychopathology: the scientific study of mental disorders, including studying the social, genetic and biological causes.
Humanities and Social Sciences
You’ll study a variety of topics as part of this Access to Higher Education course, including:
- Introduction to Sociology
- Literature from the Counter Culture
- The Mass Media
- Ethics
- Crime and Deviance
- Critical Thinking
Computer Sciences
As part of this Access to HE course, you’ll study a variety of units, including:
- Computer systems
- Desktop support
- Installing, configuring and maintaining systems
- Managing software development
- Software design and development
- Networking
- Cyber security business compliance
- Cyber threats and legislation
- Database development
- Design and develop a website
Teacher Education
This Access to Education course is developed in conjunction with Two Mile Ash Initial Teacher Training Partnership and offers a part time, blended approach to study, meaning most of your learning will be completed online. Over the course of the programme you will complete 19 modules. You will study 7 main subjects including;
- Education
- Biology
- History
- Psychology
- Independent Academic Study (Professional Studies/Research Project)
- Communication
- Application of Number
CRIMINOLOGY
You will study a variety of units that cover criminal psychology, sociological perspectives, and criminological issues in our society. Additionally, you will carry out your own small research project in an area related to your intended career path.
Engineering
You will study a variety of units that cover Mathematics for Engineers, Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) for Engineers, Electrical Science for Engineers, Mechanical Science for Engineers, Further Mathematics for Engineers and Independent Academic Study for Engineers.
Student success
I moved to the UK from Romania towards the end of 2013 with almost no school education and with no knowledge of the English language. With the desire of learning, I enrolled at Milton Keynes College.
With my hard work, determination and persistence I have passed GCSE English, GCSE Maths and BTEC Business Administration. I now have a strong will and self-belief to achieve more. With the same passion and greater interest, I am continuing my journey of learning this year with ‘Access to HE in Computer Science’.
