Tutorial and Enrichment
At Milton Keynes College we have high expectations of our students. We want you to achieve your full potential and our Tutorial System is central to this philosophy.
All full-time students under 19 years of age will have two hours per week on their timetables for tutorials. Tutorials are a combination of group and 1:1 sessions.
Group sessions provide you with the time to meet together as a group, to reflect on your progress, to plan for the future and to look at issues that will affect you in your day-to-day lives, e.g. issues about equal opportunities, careers, health, and part-time work. At these group sessions, students elect reps to go to the Student Council and also reps to feedback to their teaching staff about how they feel about their course.
Tutorials provide the time for you to meet with your personal tutor on an individual basis to identify your learning plan, review your progress and receive on-going support from your personal tutor. You have an identified Personal Tutor who is there to help you throughout the course, including help in managing your learning and help with keeping you focused and on track.
Personal Tutor
Personal tutors can be approached with any concern or worry, and are an invaluable source of help. They are key in advising, supporting, encouraging and where necessary chasing…in the nicest possible way! A personal tutor will help students:
- work out an action plan
- review progress
- agree changes that help learning
- share concerns or worries
- decide which Key Skills need developing.
Enrichment
All 16-19 year old students will be involved in a number of activities, which are not directly linked to your main course of study, but will enrich your learning and experience. Both the teaching staff and student services staff, including the youth workers, arrange these activities.
Some students are involved in foreign travel; others may organise a fundraising event for charity, whilst others may go to visit universities and/or potential work places. Other activities include visiting art galleries, going to the theatre and playing football. All sorts of activities, which give you a broader perspective and enhance learning, whilst extending it outside the 'classroom'.
The purpose of the enrichment programme is to ensure that you do not just focus on your main subjects, but have the opportunity to broaden your experiences and develop your skills appropriate to coping with Higher Education and employment.
Enrichment develops the whole person at college; we hope that you will leave with a good qualification and be articulate and confident, and ready to take your next step.
