These higher education qualifications can be the first steps in higher education and are recognised as alternatives to university study.

Higher National Certificate (HNC)

HNCs are generally equivalent to the first year of a full Bachelor’s degree.  The focus of an HNC is vocational and the qualification is highly valued by employers.  HNCs can be studied at Milton Keynes College on both a full-time basis in one year or part-time over two years.  Students can continue their studies at Milton Keynes College after completing an HNC by progressing to an HND.

A Higher National Diploma (HND)

HNDs make up the first two years of a full Bachelor’s degree.  HNDs can be completed in one year if students already hold an HNC in a relevant subject.  With an HND, it is possible to gain entry onto the second or third years of a degree programme depending on the requirements of individual universities.  Alternatively, an HND can be a sufficient standalone qualification in its own right to lead straight into employment.

Please remember that tuition fees for all Higher Education Courses are due for each academic year you study.

HND applications can be made through UCAS at or directly through the course finder. Our UCAS code is M89. HNC applications can be made only through the course finder.
