Murder Day
09/07/2010
Last week our MK6 AS students took part in the second annual 'Murder Day' here at Bletchley.
They arrived at College to find two 'bodies'; one in the back of a car and one in an 'apartment' (AP 103). The forensic science students quickly changed into their SoCO outfits and began gathering evidence such as blood samples and hair strands for testing. Meanwhile, the psychologists had examined the crime scenes and were busy putting together offender profiles. They and the sociologists then questioned several suspects, each of whom had legal representation provided by the law students. The evidence was collated during the day and eventually one of the suspects was charged with the murders. Two teams of lawyers then prepared their cases - the prosecution and defence - ready for 'court' the next morning. Whilst all of this was taking place, the film studies students were making a documentary of the whole event and some of the English students acted as reporters, producing newspaper coverage of the murders and the investigation.
A jury was selected at random from students and staff, and the case was presented to them, with more students taking other roles in court including that of the judge. Witnesses were called and cross-examined, and the forensic evidence was debated. Finally the jury retired to consider their verdict. They returned a 'not guilty' verdict, which greatly pleased 'Chloe Jekyll', the defendant, particularly as she then revealed that she had been guilty!
This was once again a successful event with excellent participation from the students. The team are now looking to hold more similar events during the academic year.
