Child Protection & Safeguarding
Milton Keynes College is committed to Safer Recruitment and to promoting the safety and welfare of young children, young people and vulnerable adults. All positions require a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check and satisfactory references. It is the responsibility of all staff to promote and safeguard our student's welfare, and all employees must demonstrate their suitability for working with children, young people and vulnerable adults. All staff will be provided with Child Protection training and will be guided through our official Child Protection Policy.
From 12 October 2009, new measures are being introduced to help prevent unsuitable people undertaking paid or volunteer work with children or vulnerable adults.
It's called the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) has been set up to help implement the Scheme and make decisions over who should be barred from working with vulnerable people. Those decisions are legally binding too. Failing to comply could result in both the employer and the employee or volunteer being prosecuted, or even going to prison.
From July 2010 all new employees, those moving jobs and volunteers who want to work with children or vulnerable adults can register with the ISA. From November 2010, they must be ISA-registered. From then on it will be illegal to employ new people who are not ISA-registered
For more information on the ISA, please visit the ISA website.
The Right to Work in the UK
The Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 makes it a criminal offence for an employer to employ anyone who does not have permission to live or work in the UK. Successful candidates will be asked to supply at least one original document from the following list, which verifies their right to work in the UK:
- A document issued by a previous employer, the Inland Revenue, the Benefits Agency, the Contributions Agency or the Employment Service, stating the individual’s national insurance number.
- A passport or national identity card identifying the individual as a British or European Economic Area (EEA) citizen, or having the right of abode in the UK.
- A birth certificate issued in the UK, the Irish Republic, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
- A letter from the Home Office indicating that the individual has permission to work in the UK.
- A work permit or other approval for employment issued by Work Permits UK.
Criminal Record Check
If you are applying for a teaching position and have been convicted of a criminal offence, you must declare any conviction(s) on the application form. Due to the nature of teaching, we are obliged to carry out an enhanced disclosure, Criminal Records Bureau check (CRB) under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Even convictions that have now been ‘spent’ must be declared, as well as ‘non-spent’ convictions. Failure to declare any convictions for a position that requires a CRB check would be considered deception and the College shall be entitled to terminate your employment without notice.
Institute for Learning (IFL) Registration
Under 2007 regulations, newly qualified teachers will need to register with the Institute for Learning to become a Registered Teacher. If successful in starting a teaching position with Milton Keynes College, we can assist you in the application process and any further training that is required.
