A Levels & GCSEs
Studying A Levels and/or GCSEs at Milton Keynes College offers you the benefits of increased and varied course choices and access to a wide range of facilities and activities, all of which are situated within an adult learning environment. Although our sixth form is a physical part of the College, we have our own identity and are able to provide the support and friendly atmosphere that you would expect from a sixth form.
You will be able to study a package of A Levels, GCSEs and BTECs to suit your needs. Most students take 3 or 4 A Levels or combine A Level study with a GCSE re-sit. We also run a successful Forensic Science qualification which can be studied alongside A Levels.
As well as studying chosen subjects, students will be able to embed their knowledge through College-led activities, including the successful Murder Day trial. Each year A-level students from all subjects participate in a two-day fictitious criminal investigation. Forensic Science students analyse the crime scene, Psychology students create a profile of the criminal, Sociology students interview and interrogate the suspects. Day one sees a suspect chosen and day two involves a full trial of the suspect, the lawyers (both Defence and Prosecution) call upon expert witnesses to help with their case. The judge sums the case up and the jury is sent away to deliberate.
Students can also benefit from learning practical entrepreneurial skills alongside A-Level and GCSE courses through participation in the Young Enterprise programme. Students will expand their business and economic understanding by forming and managing their own business over the course of the academic year while competing to win the coveted Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. The College wins awards every year and students have gone on to study for the Enterprise exam, giving them further UCAS points for applications to University.
To help students improve their teamwork skills, each year the Academic Studies department also enters a team into a dragon boat competition, with their team ‘Anchordemics’. Staff and students of all ages and abilities join forces for the day to race against some of the best premier dragon boat teams in the country.
