In addition you will study Functional skills or GCSE qualifications which are designed to provide the necessary levels of English and maths skills needed to ‘function’ in today’s society and workplace. They are a key component of all College programmes.

Who is this course for?

Do you have a keen interest in football? Is your goal to work within the football industry? Do you currently play to a high standard and want to develop your skills and ability while gaining further qualifications. Then this course is for you.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of this course you can progress to one of the following:

  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport: Football
  • Employment within the sport and active leisure industry
  • A sport and active leisure related apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

You must have a minimum of 5 GCSE's at grade A*(9)-D(3) including English and maths. You must also successfully pass a football trial.

Course detail

How much will I have to study each week?

You should be prepared to study for around 25 hours per week. Approximately 16 hours will be taught sessions at college, the rest will be homework and assessments.

You can expect to be in college 5 days per week and classes will normally be between 9am and 6pm.You can expect some classes to take place in the evening.

You will also be expected to attend all training sessions and fixtures. These will be timetabled around your classes to ensure there are no lessons missed.

Do I need to purchase anything?

First year learners and those requiring a new training kit will be charged £250 at the start of their study programme. This fee will include:

  • Bag
  • Socks
  • Shorts
  • Training t shirt
  • Polo
  • Smock training top
  • Hoodie or ¾ quarter zip top
  • Tracksuit bottoms
  • Full Gym Membership (worth over £200)
  • Contribution towards match subsidies
  • Contribution towards transport (matches and training)

Learners who do not require a new training kit package will be charged £50 at the start of their programme. This fee will include:

  • Full Gym Membership
  • Contribution towards match subsidies
  • Contribution towards transport (matches and training)


Learners who are unable to meet the fees are able to apply for a bursary to support with fees, please email judith.mercer@mkcollege.ac.uk

Learners also have the opportunity to apply for L2 Sports Studies and L3 BTEC Sport Science: Gateway to HE. These courses do not carry any fees.

How will I be assessed?

You will be continually assessed throughout the course through set project work. You will also up-skill in English and maths and complete various assessments and/or and end of unit exam.
