On successful completion of this course you can progress to one of the following:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
  • Employment within the fitness industry.

Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites to access the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise). A keen interest in gym training and fitness is essential in order to fully understand the concepts. You will also be asked to demonstrate written English to Level 2 standard.

Course detail

How much will I have to study each week?

This is a 14 week blended learning course. In addition to the workshops listed below you will be required to study around 10 hours a week in order to complete the assessments set. All materials for this will be supplied.

Induction; Wednesday 14th September 16 – 6-7pm, Bletchley.
The following units will be given to you to complete through blended learning of course materials online and hard copies. These units will be submitted at workshop 1 (apart from the Anatomy unit that will be reviewed at workshop 1 and submitted at workshop 2):

  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise (submit workshop 2)

Workshop 1 - Saturday 8th October 16 – 9-5pm, Bletchley.
The following units will be reviewed and submitted at workshop 2:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise

Workshop 2 - Wednesday 19th October 16 – 6-9pm, Bletchley.
The following units will be given to you to complete through blended learning of course materials online and hard copies. These units will be submitted at workshop 3:

  • Principles of exercise fitness and health

Workshop 3 - Wednesday 9th November 16 – 6-9pm, Bletchley.
The following units will be given to you to complete through blended learning of course materials online and hard copies. These units will be submitted at workshop 4:

  • Planning gym based exercise

Workshop 4 - Wednesday 23rd November 16 – 6-9pm, Bletchley.
The following units will be given to you to complete through blended learning of course materials online and hard copies. These units will be submitted at workshop 5:

  • Assessment review and preparation for the practical assessment

Workshop 5 - Saturday 10th December 16 – 9-5pm, Bletchley.
The following units will be given to you to complete through blended learning of course materials online and hard copies. These units will be submitted on the practical assessment day:

  • Assessment review and preparation for the practical assessment
  • Upgrades

Practical assessment - Saturday 17th December 16 – 9-5pm, Bletchley:

  • Instructing gym based exercise
Do I need to purchase anything?

No, however you will be required to wear appropriate fitness clothing for the practical sessions in the gym; shorts/ jogging bottoms. T-shirt & trainers. You may also be asked to make a small contribution to trips and visits.

How will I be assessed?

The Level 2 certificate is internally assessed. You are required to create a portfolio of evidence and participate in a gym-based practical assessment.

How will my progress be monitored?

Your progress is monitored by your subject tutor through assessment of portfolio building and feedback on your practical skills and abilities. Your tutor will support you with your studies and give you guidance on your assessment.
