School leaver apprentices

Interested in jumpstarting your career as soon as you finish school? Take up an Apprenticeship and learn while you earn.

Apprenticeships are the best way to train, qualify and gain valuable work based experience while earning a wage.

Studying while working is an attractive learning option for many young people, as you're getting paid at the same time as learning.

Apprenticeships can even offer you the chance to progress faster than going through a traditional graduate trainee route.

Milton Keynes College works with over 700 employers helping many Apprentices get into work.

As a Milton Keynes College apprentice, you will have access to the latest up-to-date facilities being trained by our highly skilled and qualified tutors.

We are working with some big names in business to get you on the path to an Apprenticeship:

  • Mirus IT
  • Harland Simon UPS
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Niftylift
  • Nissan
  • Intertek

What’s in it for me?
  • A real job with a real employer
  • A real future with the opportunity to progress in a chosen career
  • A salary
  • No tuition fees
  • Gaining qualifications that are relevant to employer requirements
  • Opportunity to continue in education after completion of an apprenticeship

Am I eligible for an Apprenticeship?

If you’re over 16, living in England and not in full-time education then you’re eligible to become an apprentice. Individuals who have achieved degree level qualifications or above are not eligible for Apprenticeship funding.

How much can I earn?

There is a minimum apprenticeship wage that all employers must pay apprentices. However, most apprentices at Milton Keynes College are paid more than this.

How long does an Apprenticeship last?

The length of an Apprenticeship programme varies according to the occupational sector in which you are working. This can be between one year for some frameworks and up to four years for more complex frameworks such as Engineering.

Does it cost anything to do an Apprenticeship?

No. As an apprentice, the Government will be subsidising the cost of the training and qualifications. Where fees are payable (for apprentices over the age of 18), these are paid by the employer.

What qualifications do I need?

Most employers are looking for candidates who have achieved or are expecting to achieve GCSEs at grade C or above, or A Levels. However, some employers will accept slightly lower grades if initial assessment testing indicates that you can work at the required level.

Can I do an Apprenticeship if I have a disability or support need?

Yes, but it is important that you declare that you have a disability or support need when you meet with our Apprenticeship Recruitment Team. We can then ensure that a package of support is put together at the start of your Apprenticeship in partnership with our Learning Support Department to meet your own individual needs. Our Learning Support department will work closely with you and your employer to ensure that you are successful in achieving all outcomes of your Apprenticeship.

Can I do an Apprenticeship if I’ve already got a job?

Yes, you can become an apprentice where you work now. Ask your employer to contact the Milton Keynes College Apprenticeship Recruitment Team.
